    Redlands Bream Removal

    December 9th, 2011

The Bream removal from Redlands announced in October will now be taking place on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th December 2011.

Members are welcolme to attend to view the netting.  However I would advise in advance that the primary objective is the removal of Bream, not a survey of the Carp stock.  Please don’t expect the netting to be stopped so you can be shown all the Carp prior to slipping them back into the lake.

So the Netting can take place uninterupted Redlands will be closed to fishing during the days on both Friday 16th and Saturday 17th but will be open again to fish the nights.  Those fishing Friday night need to at least reel in at 1st light (approx 7.30am / 8am)

There will still be lots of work to be done around the lake too, so rather than stand around waiting for Carp to be netted we would like to think that those attending will participate in an impromptu Work Party too.

    Cormorant Watch

    October 31st, 2011

Angling’s representative body, the Angling Trust, has launched a new web site for anglers to record sightings of cormorants, goosanders and mergansers throughout the UK: www.cormorantwatch.org The new site is easy to use and will gather vital data to help persuade government of the need for action to protect fisheries.
The Angling Trust succeeded in persuading the Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon to carry out a review of the licensing procedures and he has stated that he is prepared to take “bold decisions”.  As part of this review, the Trust needs data on the abundance of cormorants to convince the government to take decisive action.

Anglers can record sightings and activity of cormorants anywhere in the UK, directly onto a Google Maps driven micro-site at www.cormorantwatch.org  Users will also be able to scroll around the map and zoom in to view details of each recorded cormorant sighting and watch the real picture of cormorant predation in UK waters build up week by week.

If any members see Cormorants on our waters we would encourage you to record them via the www.cormorantwatch.org website.

    Redlands

    October 25th, 2011

The Committee will shortly be carrying out some fisheries management at Redlands.  We have been in consultation with the Environment Agency for some time now regarding improvements to our Redlands venue, and shall be shortly embarking on an exercise that will improve the venue as a whole.  This will involve reducing the biomass of the lake by reducing the head of Bream, which will result in increased water quality to enable our fish stock of remaining Bream, Tench, Carp and Silver Fish to flourish and grow.  This work will also assist in restoring the balance to the lake and providing much needed funds to enable us to carry out further improvements, such as completing the work on the Ponds at the top of the venue to transform these into a dedicated match fishery.

We know that members will be keen to come along and see what is netted so we will advise members of the dates that the work will take place.  We envisage it will be towards the end of November once the water temperature has reduced and the weed has died down.

    New Website

    October 5th, 2011

We hope you like our new website, we are more than pleased with the investment that we have made.  There are still have a few changes and enhancements to make, in particular the Catch Reports Section, an “A-Team” Gallery of the lakes inhabitants so you know what fish your targeting, better information on the capture gallery (captor, weights, etc) and some more information about the club, the committee and bailiffs.

We want the new site to be future-proof and more interactive to enable us to provide our membership with real time updates, but we want to only make these enhancements once.  We are currently looking into developing a Smart Phone App that will provide updates of news, catch reports and capture photos for members.  This is all dependent on feeds from the new website, something which we are playing with at the moment.  We need to ensure that the data we post to the website is both usable and searchable from the website, but also compatible with a Smart Phone App too.

None of The Committee are web or computer gurus, to say the least, so this will take a little bit of time to sort out.  (If you are or you know someone who is a web or computer guru and can lend a hand please get in touch)

In the meantime we are keeping the website as up to date as possible.  If there is anything else you’d like to see then please feel free to let us know at members@southlakeas.co.uk
